During a Singa Switzerland party I met with Nadine. When I told her about my coffee project and that Ehtiopian coffee was my first love for specialty coffee, she told me about her Ethiopian travel company with her husband Kebede. She introduced me to Maria, founder of Original Food Schweiz and we started a conversation with her. We tried several coffee she’s importing and we liked the one from the Diri cooperative, with its berries and chocolate notes and sometimes floral aftertaste (I say sometimes as it is a mix of so many wild varieties that you’ll be surprised every now and then when some new taste pops up!)
This coffee is naturally organic, wild coffee picked from the forests in the Kaffa region by the members of the Diri co-operative. It preserves the high biodiversity and surprise you find in Ethiopian wild varieties. Ethiopia is believed to be the birth place of Arabica Coffee, and therefore all Arabica varieties have ancestors in this country.
Established by organic forest coffee farmers, the Diri co-operative resides near the birthplace of coffee Arabica. Farmers of the area grow coffee on family owned plots and in the surrounding forest. Diri farmers also grow various food crops such as maize, teff, beans, barley, and vegetables for domestic consumption. Farmers also rear animals such as cows, sheep, goats, and chicken. The Diri cooperative is located in southwest Ethiopia’s SNNPR state, Kaffa (or Keffa) Zone, Gimbo Woreda.
The landscape of the Diri cooperative is moderately leveled and blanketed by natural forest. The coffee catchment areas ideal for coffee production can be found at altitudes ranging from 1500 to 1900 meters. Diri coffee is cultivated within the forest and on family owned plots. Farmers utilize the natural shade of the homestead and forest for their growing. The coffee is well managed and completely organic and uncontaminated as no agrochemicals are used.

The Kaffa area is part of the UNESCO Kafa Biosphere Reserve. Some areas are protected by all human activities to preserve the rich biodiversity, whereas buffer areas are permitted human activities.
The area preserves 5000 wild varieties of arabica coffee. All arabica plants cultivated around the world were originally from Ethiopia.
